Slap - (2015)

Slap is a dark comedy, that explores the clash of contrasting personalities. It presents the juxtaposition of Connor's strong, masculine demeanour with the vulnerability and authenticity expressed through makeup and dresses. The film becomes a captivating battle for emotional authenticity and self-discovery.

Narrative structure:

1st = Introduces Connor, who appears isolated and disconnected from his surroundings.

2nd = Portrays Connor's increasing frustration and alienation, leading to a pivotal event - Connor leaving the house in makeup and a dress

3rd = Showcases the aftermath of the party and his further ostracisation from his group. The dramatic changes in the film are marked by Connor's emotional journey, from detachment to anger and introspection.

Themes and messages:

- Isolation, frustration, the consequence of actions

- Small events can have a significant impact on one's life and relationships

- Complexities of human connection and the potential for personal growth through self-reflection

Visual motifs:

- Mirrors symbolise self-reflection and the search for identity

- Hands represent physical and emotional connection, being used to apply makeup and for boxing

Setting:

- Aesthetically, the environment appears cold and sterile, mirroring Connor's emotional state. The muted colour palette mainly consists of greys and blues. This reinforces the sombre mood of the film

Micro-elements and subjective experience:

- Few moments that slide towards subjective experiences, such as close-ups of Connor's face during emotional outbursts. Convey the intensity of Connor's internal struggles, contrasting with the overall detached tone of the film

- Loose framing, employing a handheld camera to create a sense of unease and immediacy. The framing often isolates the characters, emphasising their internal struggles and emotional distance

- Fragmented editing techniques contribute to the fragmented narrative structure, enhancing the portrayal of Connor's emotional disconnect

Well-written confrontation with Lola:

- Effectively captures the tension and emotional intensity of the scene. Dialogue is concise yet impactful, revealing the underlying issues between the characters. The scene showcases the power dynamics and complexities of their relationship, adding depth to the overall narrative. Lola focuses on the only tangible thing in this big topic around Connor, by hyper-fixating on lipstick it shows her inability to understand the topic as a whole on a larger scale.
