The Ellington Kid - (2012)

'The Ellington Kid' utilises micro-elements and employs a 3 act structure whilst incorporating various narrative techniques to construct its dramatic qualities and convey different points of view. The visual aesthetics, achieved through evocative lighting, contribute to the film's dark and mysterious nature. The soundtrack with haunting melodies and well-timed sound effects, heightens tensions. The naturalistic attention to detail in production design, including set dressing and costumes, further immerses the audience in the world of the film

Narrative structure: (creates a well=paced and satisfying narrative arc)
The short film adheres to the traditional 3 act structure.
1st = Introducing Nathan who retells the story of an unexpected crime
2nd = Rising action, the Ellington Kid navigates through challenges whilst attempting to deal with the consequences of his involvement
3rd = Brings resolution to the story, as Nathan makes a comical joke, curiosity rises

Continuity editing techniques ensure smooth transitions between scenes, maintaining a coherent flow and facilitating the audience's comprehension
Mid-shot of two friends, casual meeting. Dialogue and narrative allows the spectator to comprehend the past from the present. Naturalistic lighting and mise-en-scene allows for an immersive realistic atmosphere. Over the shoulder shots to allow for focus on each actor at a time, following the 180 degree rule to ensure it is match on action and smooth continuity editing. Camera slowly tracks in closer, and the cuts of Nathan go from mid-shot to close up to entice the spectator further and increase suspense.

Mid shot; slightly slowed down recording to show how helpless the Ellington Kid is and emphasises how slowly he was moving. The use of two lines of lights above and showing the ceiling from a lower angle, makes him seem entrapped and creates an uncomfortable, claustrophobic atmosphere, also making the spectator aware that there are people following him.

Low angle to make him seem more threatening, ceilings once again being shown to create a claustrophobic feeling. Recording once again slowed down to make his movements seem more threatening and impactful
